Luságua – Resíduos Smart+, a company from the Aquapor group, is implementing an organic waste collection project in the restaurants of Albufeira. The initiative, developed in partnership with the Albufeira City Council, aims to valorize the waste and contribute to meeting the European targets for diverting this waste from landfills.
Starting from February, the restaurants in Albufeira will be provided with a 240-liter container for the disposal of organic waste. The waste will be collected daily by Luságua – Resíduos Smart+ and later transformed into 100% natural compost, which can be used for soil fertilization, including in agriculture, golf courses, and other areas.
“This project strengthens our commitment to ensuring more efficient waste management for the entire Albufeira community. Currently, around 45% of the waste disposed of indiscriminately is organic waste, a result determined after the latest waste characterization carried out in December 2023. Following the waste hierarchy principle, organic waste can be valorized, contributing to the circularity and sustainability of the Municipality of Albufeira,” said Ana Custódio, Waste Projects Manager at Luságua, a company of the Aquapor group, responsible for managing urban waste collection and transportation services in the Albufeira area.
Among the waste that can be placed in this container are solid food leftovers from meals, fruit peels and pits, vegetable peels and leftovers, egg shells, cooked meat and fish leftovers, bread and cake scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters, and paper napkins.
This will be the first phase of the organic waste collection project, which will soon be extended to the entire population of Albufeira.
