Aquapor, through its company Luságua Lisboa, achieved its best ever result in water efficiency this year, with a percentage of unbilled water of 0.7%. The national average is around 27%.

By implementing a set of strategies to avoid wasting drinking water, Luságua Lisboa has managed to significantly reduce water losses, achieving an unprecedented result this year of just 0.7% (accumulated results to August), well below the national average, and in a top position worldwide.

In Portugal, according to data released by the Water and Waste Services Regulatory Authority (ERSAR) in the 2023 report, almost a third of the water entering the supply networks is wasted through breaks, breakdowns and detour.

“The results we have now achieved, which we are very proud of, are only possible due to the adoption of a multidisciplinary and innovative methodological approach, which is integrated and results-oriented. We are committed to the water transition and environmental sustainability, and with these goals in mind we have made a huge investment in operational improvement and water efficiency,” says Daniel Silva, general manager of Luságua Lisboa.

In 2011, before the concession, the amount of unbilled water in this network was around 45%. By 2023, the percentage had been reduced to 5% and this year Luságua Lisboa recorded its lowest ever figure, 0.7%, making it a national and international benchmark in the sector.

In order to reduce water losses, Luságua Lisboa has implemented a number of resource optimization measures, including the creation of Monitoring and Control Zones, cadastral surveys, monitoring of water flows and volumes, leak detection campaigns, the installation of pressure reducing valves in the main MCZs, and the replacement of distribution pipes and placement of shut-off valves in the water network.

On the other hand, the concessionaire has been investing in the use of technological innovations, such as telemetry, meter sizing analysis, ultrasonic meters and zero consumption analysis.

Luságua Lisboa, an Aquapor company, is the concessionaire for the Water Supply and Wastewater Sanitation System in APL’s Area of Jurisdiction (in the area between Algés and Matinha, in Lisbon). The Concession, awarded for a period of 8 years, also includes the construction, repair, renovation and improvement of all the facilities, infrastructures and equipment that make up the assets assigned to the Concession, as well as the collection, transportation and proper disposal of wastewater.
